action

The film is set in Silesia in the mid-1930s . The Polish miner Jaś works in a German mine . His wife Wichta raises his two young sons while he works in the underground mine . When the German owners decide to close the mine because of its poor profitability , the miners strike . The underground mine is to be flooded. The strikers occupy the mine and the relatives take care of it, although the police hermetically seal the mine. When the miners go on hunger strike, the solidary families demonstrate in front of the colliery. The demonstrations are brutally suppressed by the police. But the miners still believe that they can save the colliery. When the miners informed the management that they would not leave the tunnels even in the event of flooding, a positive agreement was finally reached with the owners.
