action

The record prayers (1st part)

Heinrich Breloer visited the Canisianum in Lüdinghausen in the 1950s . The boarding school is run by Bernhard Hürfeld, a priest and former inmate of the Dachau concentration camp, who is strictly Catholic. After more than 30 years, Breloer visits his former classmates and talks to them about the time in boarding school and the morals of the Adenauer period . The boarding school is being rebuilt after the war and the youngest of the boarding school students are living in tight quarters. Your daily routine is organized down to the smallest detail and shaped by a Catholic upbringing that puts guilt and sin in the foreground. The former students talk about experiences that are characterized by loneliness and bitterness.

The free spirits (part 2)

The second part of the film is about the former high school graduates of the boarding school. Breloer visits them and tells the story of the rebellion against the narrow-minded morals of the boarding school and school management. New students come to the boarding school and confront young Heinrich with jazz music and literature banned by the Catholic Church. In 1961 Heinrich graduated from high school and left the boarding school.

Reviews

"The director, who also processes his own biographical experiences here, continues to develop elements of the" docudrama "in this film, which later became his unmistakable trademark."
