Game board

Simply brilliant is an abstract placement game by Reiner Knizia . The gameplay is reminiscent of dominoes , but the stones made of double hexagons are not laid out linearly, but in a flat area. The game for 2–4 players (with a variant for single players) ages 10 and up lasts 45–60 minutes and was published in German in 2004 by Kosmos . It is now distributed internationally by over 15 game publishers.

In the same year it was nominated as one of five games for the Game of the Year Critics' Prize and reached 5th place in the German Games Prize . It won the Austrian Game of Games Prize and the Swiss Game Prize in the strategy games category.

Theme and equipment

Simply ingenious does not involve a story, and the design of the game board is abstract. Each player plays simultaneously with all symbols against all other players.

The large playing field is printed with a hexagon , which is divided into lots of small hexagons. The flat game pieces made of dark plastic consist of two small connected hexagons, each of which is printed with one of six symbols. Such a double stone can have the same or different pattern twice. The symbols are clearly differentiated in terms of color and shape, making the game easier for color-blind or visually impaired players.

Game flow

Each player always holds six randomly drawn tiles face down in their hand or on a storage board and discards one of them in each round. The stones can be placed anywhere. You only get points if you put the same symbols next to each other. The player receives one point for all tiles with the same symbol that are already on the table and which are in a direct line from the ten edges of their own tiles.

He marks these points separately according to symbols on his scoring board with a small colored stone. If a player reaches the maximum value of 18 points with a stone, he may immediately place another stone. The aim of the game is to advance in all six symbols. The end of the game is reached when no more pieces fit on the board or (very rarely) when a player reaches the maximum value in all six symbols.

The winner is the player whose furthest symbol has reached the most points.

target group

Despite being classified as an abstract strategy game, “Einfach Genial” can be learned very quickly and is therefore also attractive for casual gamers. The character of the game changes with the number of players. It's a tactical game for two, with lots of opportunities for constructive and destructive behavior. With more players the intuitive component increases. The solo game is more random and is similar to solitaire .

variants

In 2005, “Simply Genial” was published by United Soft Media as a computer game in which the player can compete against the computer, which has three levels of difficulty.

A special version for two players, which is intended as a travel edition thanks to plug-in elements, was launched in 2006. It uses a smaller playing field and fewer stones.
