Suleika is a board game by the French game designer Dominique Ehrhard . It was published for the first time in 2007 by the French game publisher Gigamic with illustrations by Marie Cardouat under the title Marrakech , and in the following year Zoch published the game in German with illustrations by Victor Boden as Suleika . In 2008 it was awarded the “ As d'Or - Jeu de l'Année ” and “ Game of Games ” game awards and was also on the nomination list for “ Game of the Year ”.

Plot and game play

Suleika, the sultan's daughter , wants to get married. The Sultan therefore sends his vizier Omar to the bazaar to look around among the carpet dealers for a suitable candidate. In the role of the trader, the players now try to impress the vizier by spreading their carpets on the bazaar and, if possible, covering up the carpets of their competitors. If the vizier stops on a carpet, the relevant dealer receives money in the form of piasters . The aim is to have collected as many piasters as possible and visible carpets on display at the end of the game.

The game material includes:

  • 1 character ("Omar")
  • 57 fabric carpets in four colors
  • 40 coins ("piasters")
  • 1 six-sided die with the values 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4
  • game schedule

The game board shows the bazaar, which is empty at the beginning, divided into 7 × 7 fields. In the course of the game, the players lay out their carpets in the bazaar, these are always two fields in size. Omar, the only pawn, is placed in the center of the bazaar and each player receives an equal number of piasters.

It is drawn in turn. When it is a player's turn, he first moves Omar by choosing a direction (left, right or straight ahead) and rolling the number of squares. If Omar's movement ends on the carpet of another player, he must be paid for it; the amount depends on the number of adjacent fields with carpets of the same color. Finally, your own carpet is laid out next to Omar, and opposing carpets can also be covered.

The game ends when all players have laid their carpets. For each piaster and each visible carpet field, a player is awarded one point; The winner is whoever was able to collect the most points.

Awards and reviews

In 2008 Suleika was awarded the French “ As d'Or - Jeu de l'Annéegame award and the Austrian “ Game of Games” game award. The reasoning for the latter states:

“As easy to understand as the rules of the game and as pleasantly manageable as the lovingly chosen game material is - above all the colorful little carpets that gradually appear on the game board - the charm of the brisk course of the game is also fascinating. Of course, the luck of the dice plays an essential role, but with simple means, decisive tactical elements are also brought into play. The theme and the pretty furnishings create an atmospheric oriental atmosphere. And finally, when playing “Suleika” there is a lot of interaction and communication at the gaming table. All in all, the gaming commission is convinced that "Suleika" has the potential to become a real classic game for the whole family. "

- Dagmar de Cassan / Games Committee of the Vienna Games Academy

Suleika was also on the nomination list for “ Game of the Year ” 2008. The following year it received the award “ Mensa Select ” and was nominated for the “ Japan Boardgame Prize ” in the category “Games for Beginners and Families”.

The reviews were generally somewhat less positive: the reviewers praised the game material, the harmonious design and the simple rules of the game, which would make the game easily accessible to children in particular. On the other hand, however , Suleika offers too little game depth and tactical options to be able to entertain experienced players in the long term.

"The 2 carpets" expansion

On the occasion of the Games Festival in Vienna in 2008, the Austrian Games Museum distributed an expansion developed by Klemens Franz with the title Suleika - The 2 Carpets . It contains 57 cards with printed movement patterns for Omar, which replace the dice and the random element of the game that goes with it.

If you are playing with the expansion, each player receives an identical set of movement cards at the beginning of the game, which he shuffles and places face down in front of him. Then he takes the top two cards in hand. Instead of rolling the dice for Omar's movement, a player selects one of the two cards and carries out the movement described there. The card is then discarded and a new one is drawn from the stack.

The expansion cards can be played in two variants: With the “blue” variant, only the number of fields is specified, the direction can be determined as in the normal game (left, right or straight ahead). With the “yellow” variant, the directions and fields are precisely specified, there are also cards with otherwise prohibited backward movements and without movement.
