The unicorn cod ( Bregmaceros ) are the only genus within the cod-like fish family of the same name (Gadiformes). These are small fish that live on the coasts of tropical and subtropical seas.

Unicorn cod are two to eleven centimeters long. They each have two symmetrical dorsal and anal fins. The first dorsal fin ray is single, without connection with the dorsal fin (name). The first rays of the pelvic fins are long drawn out. They have small round scales, no goatee and no lateral line organ .
