The Annual phlox ( Phlox drummondii ), and Summer Phlox or Annual Phlox mentioned, is a plant from the family of polemoniaceae (Polemoniaceae).

description

The annual phlox is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches stature heights of about 5 to 50 cm. It has a glandular hairy stem. The lower opposite and upper alternate leaves are simple and sessile. There are no stipules.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical and five-fold. The five free stamens are unequal. The five sepals are fused with calyx teeth 5 to 7 mm long. The five petals are fused Roehrig, the corolla tube has a length of about 1 cm. The flowering period extends from June to September.

The spherical capsule fruit has a diameter of about 3 mm and contains only about three to five seeds.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

This plant species originally comes from Texas, where it occurs in sparse oak forests on sandy soils.

use

The annual phlox has been in culture since 1835 at the latest. It is used as an ornamental plant for summer flower beds. There are numerous varieties that vary in height and flower color, whose corolla has an eye or not. An example of a star phlox is the variety 'Cuspidata' whose petals have three teeth.
