The annual beach star ( Asteriscus aquaticus ) is a species of beach star ( Asteriscus ) in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

The annual beach star is an annual plant that reaches heights of (2) 10 to 15 centimeters. The short and mostly simple stem is forked and trugdoldig upward. The flower heads usually have a diameter of 13 to 14, rarely up to 18 millimeters. The outer bracts are leaf-shaped, spread out and longer than the ray florets .

The flowering period extends from April to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

The annual beach star occurs in the western, central and eastern Mediterranean region from Morocco to Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Israel. It is also found on the islands of Madeira and the Canaries. The species grows in sandy, alternately dry to moist pioneer locations, in Phrygana, on sandy coasts and in cultivated and fallow land.

Taxonomy

Synonyms for Asteriscus aquaticus (L.) Less. are Bubonium aquaticum (L.) Hill and Nauplius aquaticus (L.) Cass.

use

The annual beach star is rarely used as an ornamental plant for summer flower beds.
