The single-skin rush ( Eleocharis uniglumis ) is a species of the genus swamp rush ( Eleocharis ) within the sourgrass family (Cyperaceae).

description

Inflorescence with the single spikelet
Stalk base with runners
Spikelets
Flower with perigone bristles and ovary with style
Spikelets, the lowest bracts are sterile and almost completely cover the base of the spikelet.

Vegetative characteristics

The single-skin rush grows as a wintering green, herbaceous plant and reaches heights of up to 40 centimeters. It forms dark, blue-green stems that are not easily squashed. When dry it has thin furrows. The lower leaf sheaths are yellow or reddish brown in color. It also forms underground rhizome runners.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to August. At the end of the stem there is a single spikelet. The spikelet is elongated and pointed with a length of 5 to 20 millimeters and contains 10 to 30 flowers. A flower usually has four, sometimes rudimentary, perigone bristles . The style is thickened at the base and ends in two pits.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 46, but also 40, 42, 50, 54, 56 or 80.

ecology

The single-skin rush is a helomorphic hydrophyte .

Occurrence

The distribution area of Eleocharis uniglumis extends from Europe to the Far Eastern Asiatic Russia and to Nepal and from subarctic North America to the northern United States. The One Furry bulrush grows in moist to wet, partly flooded sedge vineyards , reeds , swelling and low moors and often ruderal . It is also slightly tolerant of salt. It is relatively scattered along the coasts and somewhat more common in the interior. Their populations are currently threatened by the draining of wet meadows . The single-skin swamp rush has its main occurrence in the plant formation of the creeping and step lawns , the nutrient-poor moors and bog forests and the nutrient-rich waters. It is a character species of Eleocharitetum uniglumis from the association Phragmition, but also occurs in societies of the association Agropyro-Rumicion.

Systematics

It was first described in 1820 under the name ( Basionym ) Scirpus uniglumis by Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link . The new combination to Eleocharis uniglumis (Link) Schult. was published in 1824 by Joseph August Schultes . Eleocharis uniglumis belongs together with, for example, the common swamp rush ( Eleocharis palustris ) and other species to the widespread collective species group Eleocharis palustris agg.

In the species Eleocharis uniglumis one can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Eleocharis uniglumis subsp. septentrionalis (Zinserl.) TVEgorova : It occurs in Norway, Finland and in northern European Russia.
  • Eleocharis uniglumis subsp. sterneri Strandh. : It occurs in the Czech Republic and on the Swedish islands of Gotland and Öland .
  • Eleocharis uniglumis subsp. uniglumis : It occurs from Europe to Far Eastern Asiatic Russia and to western Nepal and from subarctic North America with Greenland to the northern United States.
