The Residents (in the big cities people registration office , rarely also Einwohneramt ) is a municipal authority of the Swiss Confederation and the Principality of Liechtenstein . As a reporting office , the authority deals with the reporting obligation anchored in the reporting system . The residents' registration office establishes the first contact with the city administration. It is responsible for registering new arrivals, and processes all moves, changes of address or other changes in the personal details of a resident. The residents' registration office is also responsible for receiving applications for the Swiss identity card and issuing certificates. It also accepts various requests in connection with the aliens police regulation of the residence of foreigners, checks them and forwards them to the cantonal migration office.

Changes of address

In accordance with the municipal laws of the cantons, a move, move or departure must be reported to the residents' registration office within 14 days.

Moving within the district

The change of residence within the administrative district should be reported to the residents' registration office in person, online or by registered mail within 8 to 14 days after the move.

Passport and identity card

The new Swiss passport 10 with electronically saved photo and fingerprints has been available since March 1, 2010 . The passport and identity card (ID) can be requested from the cantonal passport office by phone or via the Internet. The residents' registration office only accepts orders for identity cards, since 2011 the cantonal passport office has only accepted applications.

Online counter

At the online counter (not available in every canton ) it is possible, for example, to order a home ID from an internet-enabled computer or to request address information.
