Eirini d'Eirinis (another known spelling: Eirini d'Eyrinys ) (* 1630 in Ruschyn , † around 1730 in Boudry ) was a pioneer of mining in Switzerland .

Life

There are no precise and reliable records of his life before his arrival in Switzerland. From the beginning of 1700 he became known through activities as a mine prospector and entrepreneur in Switzerland.

From 1708 the canton of Zurich began to search systematically for coal stores. Eirini d'Eirinis was the driving force behind the search in Vaud , which began in 1709 . Together with two Vaud notables he received from the competent authorities in Bern the first concession for the exploitation of stone and brown coal deposits in the Valley of Paudèze , Vaud .

In 1711, Eirini d'Eirinis began mining minerals in the Bernese Alps . 1712 he discovered the asphalt deposits La Presta in Val de Travers in Neuchâtel Jura . In 1717 he acquired the concession for the local soil deposits and founded a shareholder company for the organized mining, export and sale of asphalt.

Eirini d'Eirinis wrote various writings that should point out the benefits and importance of coal and asphalt, as well as scientific publications. In 1721 Eirini d'Eirinis wrote his "Dissertation on natural asphalt".

D'Eirinis died around 1730.

Afterlife, meaning

After his death, d'Eirini's son continued his father's activities. He became known for the mines and the earth pitch extraction near Pechelbronn in Alsace . The petroleum from the Pechelbronn layers was initially used to treat skin diseases. Commercial use began in 1735 and ended in 1970.

The hard coal and lignite deposits explored by Eirini d'Eirinis in the Paudèze valley were mined and smelted until the second half of the 19th century and again during the two world wars. Asphalt was extracted and exported from the asphalt mines in Val de Travers for almost three centuries until 1986.
