Bramming railway accident

In the Bramming railway accident on July 26, 1913 near Bramming station , Denmark , a train derailed on the open track due to a track warping . 15 people died.

Starting position

The 1029 express train came from Fredericia , where it was scheduled to leave at 2:50 pm. He drove through cars from Copenhagen and was longer than usual. It was therefore pulled by two steam locomotives , K 505, reinforced by the A 154, to which ten wagons , the two-axle freight car with brakeman's cab QE 34468, the four-axle baggage car EM 2151 and the passenger car AS 283 (bogie car, four-axle), AA 20 (bogie car, four-axle), CB 466 (two-axle), CB 1003 (two-axle), CN 11049 (bogie carriage, four-axle), AN 447 (bogie carriage, four-axle), CM 10277 (bogie carriage, four-axle) and CM 10226 (bogie carriage, four-axle) followed. The train carried 279 travelers , including emigrants to the United States .

On arrival at Lunderskov station , the train was three minutes late , which it could easily catch up without having to go too fast. When passing through train stations, the speed limit was 75 km / h, and 90 km / h on the open road.

the accident

According to later statements by travelers and staff, the train is said to have traveled faster than usual, estimates reached a speed of 120 km / h. The final report stated that the maximum speed was likely exceeded and driven around 105 km / h. The engine driver of the front locomotive , on the other hand, testified that the speed had been reduced to 75 km / h due to the passage through Bramming station. He did not increase it, as the Tjæreborg station had to be passed shortly afterwards .

The scene of the accident was in a slight curve (radius 3000 m). Track construction work had taken place here and it was now complete. The track was not yet completely embedded in the ballast . A speed limit was not indicated . For an ultimately unexplained cause - a track warpage due to extreme heat was ultimately assumed to be probable - the tender of the first locomotive derailed at 4:15 p.m. shortly after the train had passed through Bramming station, pulling the second locomotive and nine wagons with it. All of them were severely damaged, and the three wooden wagons between the steel wagons were smashed. The locomotive staff were able to get to safety by jumping off. Only the last car remained on the track.

consequences

15 people died and 44 were also injured .

useful information

In Bramming Egnsmuseum a model of the accident the train can be seen and objects from the wrecked train are issued. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, a special exhibition took place from May 11th to August 25th 2013 and the Danish Transport Minister, Henrik Dam Kristensen , visited the accident site.
