Iron (II) fumarate is a divalent iron salt of fumaric acid and is used for oral replacement therapy in iron deficiency anemia .
Biological importance
Iron is only absorbed in the intestine in its bivalent form. The drug should be taken on an empty stomach, as this is where iron absorption is greatest. However, gastrointestinal complaints can occur in sensitive patients. Antacids can also inhibit iron absorption. In this case, it makes sense to divide the dose into several individual doses.
