Ekkehard Dörschlag

Ekkehard Dörschlag (* 1963 ) is an Austrian physiotherapist , ski mountaineer , cyclist and is considered one of the most successful mountain bikers in Austria. He is characterized above all by his versatility and regularly competes in extreme sports events .

Athletic career

In 1980, Dörschlag started racing cycling as a competitive sport and has won various titles. For example, he was Salzburg national champion on the road nine times . Between 1986 and 1989 he won four series of the Ötztal Cycle Marathon and is the record winner of this race to this day (July 2011). Between 1990 and 2001 he rode a mountain bike professionally. During this time he was able to secure the Austrian state championship four times and as many victories in the Top Six mountain bike marathon series.

Records

On March 4, 2007, Dörschlag set a new world record in the course of the touring ski marathon in Bad Gastein . Within 24 hours he was able to cover 34 laps (508 meters in altitude) on the Graukogel and thus 17,476 meters in altitude. The route led from the middle station of the Graukogel chair lift up to the mountain station. The official confirmation of the record by the Guinness World Records Limited took place on December 11th of the same year:

"The greatest distance skied uphill using climbing skins in 24 hours is 17.476 m (57.336 ft) and was achieved by Ekkehard Doerschlag (Austria) in Bad Gastein, Austria on March 3-4, 2007."

However, the record was broken in 2008 by Franz Pötzelsberger. On March 8, 2009, Dörschlag regained the record when he managed to complete 36 laps (18,288 meters in altitude).

At a similar event - a twelve-hour competition on the Hahnbaum near Sankt Johann im Pongau - he set a new racing record by climbing almost 22 times within twelve hours (510 meters in altitude) and covering 11,010 meters in altitude.

Life and career

In 1982 Dörschlag passed his Matura at HBLA Ursprung in Salzburg . Until 1991 he worked in the textile trade. This was followed by studies at the Salzburg Academy for Physiotherapy , which he completed in 1995 with a diploma. Since 1999 he has been running his own practice in Sankt Johann im Pongau . Dörschlag and his wife Anita - the couple married in 1992 - have two children together.
