See, I want to send out a lot of fishermen ( BWV 88) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach . He composed it in Leipzig in 1726 for the 5th Sunday after Trinity and performed it for the first time on July 21, 1726.
Story and words
Bach composed the cantata in Leipzig on the 5th Sunday after Trinity and performed it for the first time on July 21, 1726.
The prescribed readings for the Sunday were 1 Petr 3.8 to 15 LUT , "Sanctify Christ in your hearts," and Luke 5,1-11 LUT , the great fishing of Simon Peter . The cantata text is very similar in structure and content to cantatas by Johann Ludwig Bach . The theme is taken from the Gospel. An unknown lyricist starts from a corresponding verse from Jeremiah , Jer 16,16 LUT , which opens the cantata. The prophetic words of the fishermen and hunters originally referred to the return from exile in Babylon . The central movement of the cantata, which begins the second part after the sermon, is the quotation from verse 10 of the Gospel. The cantata closes with the last stanza of Georg Neumark's chorale Who only lets God rule (1641). This chorale had served as the basis for Bach's chorale cantata Wer only den dear God lets rule, BWV 93 , on the same occasion in his second cantata cycle.
Occupation and structure
The cantata is occupied by four soloists, soprano , alto , tenor and bass , four-part choir only in the chorale, two horns , two oboe d'amore , waist , two violins , viola and basso continuo .
part One
- “Basso solo”: See, I want to send out a lot of fishermen
- Recitativo (tenor): How easily the highest could do without us
- Aria (tenor): No, God is always diligent
Part II
- Arioso (tenor, bass): Jesus said to Simon: Do not be afraid
- Aria Duetto (soprano, alto): If God calls himself, the blessing must
- Recitativo (Soprano): What can frighten you in your walk
- Chorale: Sing, pray and walk in God's ways
music
The first movement is entrusted to the bass and labeled "Basso solo", probably because Jeremiah lets God speak in the first person. The music corresponds to the text like in a motet . The two sections are dedicated to the words fisherman and hunter. The first section paints a seascape with undulating movements of the strings and oboes in 6/8 time over an organ point . This representation of waves and water is called a barcarole by John Eliot Gardiner . The voice repeats the text several times in haunting declamation. Suddenly the scene changes to a hunt, horns are added, the tempo in 4/4 time is allegro, almost presto. In this section too, the voice declaims expressively.
The recitative ends with a question, “Does he leave us the enemies cunning and treachery?” Since the answer is given in the following aria, it begins without the usual ritornello with a passionate “No, no”. The middle section begins with a contrasting, equally passionate “yes, yes”. The aria ends with a ritornello in the style of a minuet , in which the strings join the obituato oboe d'amore . According to Alfred Dürr , the clear structure of this music represents the “right track” mentioned in the text.
Movement 4 is the center of the composition. The tenor announces as an evangelist : "Jesus spoke to Simon". The literal speech of Jesus, who called Peter as a disciple, is sung by the bass as Vox Christi (voice of Christ): “Do not be afraid; because from now on you will catch people ”. With careful phrasing, the text is set to a continuo quasi ostinato .
The final chorale is a simple four-part movement.
