The Dolomitenmann is a relay competition that has been held in Lienz / East Tyrol every year at the beginning of September since 1988 . Since 1997, Red Bull has been the main sponsor of the event, which is now known as the Red Bull Dolomitenmann . The organizer advertises the run as "The toughest team competition in the world" .

The originator of the sporting event is the former alpine ski racer Werner Grissmann . The name is derived from the mountain range of the Dolomites near Lienz.

Disciplines

The competition, which takes place every September, consists of the following disciplines:

procedure

* As of 2017
The mountain runners start at 10:00 a.m. at Lienz main square (674 m). From there they run in the flat to Amlach . This is followed in the Goggsteig by a striking, rocky ascent to the Gogghütte (360 meters in altitude on a 900 m route). After a 2 km long, level passage, you enter the Hallebachtal (1,374 m). The goal of mountain runners is the Kühbodentörl at 2,441 m.

After the mountain runner has tee off, the paraglider first runs - with the umbrella still wrapped up - to the starting point. During the first flight, a pylon must be flown around correctly. Then the stopover at Taxer Moos takes place on the Moosalm (1,000 m). From there - with the umbrella shouldered - the ascent to the "ladies start" (1,120 m) must be covered and the second flight to the Dolomite Stadium in Lienz (674 m) must be completed. After half a round of the stadium, the paraglider's goal is reached.

After the handover to the mountain biker , the path leads again past the Moosalm to the Hochsteinhütte (2,057 m). The mountain bike has to be shouldered several times before skiing down the H2000 ski slope to the sports field in Leisach , where the final handover takes place.

The kayaker first has to swim through the Drau before completing the obligatory “alpine start”: from a height of around seven meters, sitting in a kayak, he falls into the river Drau. After a total of 1,300 m race and several upward passages has a serious course in Isel - cataract be overcome. After a last sprint with all the equipment, the finish line is reached at the main square in Lienz.

Organizing Committee

  • Werner Grissmann (President)
  • Nikolaus Grissmann (Vice President)
  • Stefan Mayr (Vice President)

Remarks

  • Women wanted to take part for the first time in the competition that took place on September 12, 2009. However, this was rejected by Grissmann because the route was too difficult for women and the name of the event would otherwise have to be changed.
  • From the 27th Dolomitenmann on September 6th, 2014, the order of the competitions was changed: the paraglider hands over to the mountain biker in Leisach. The canoeist ends the competition. The change enables the teams to cross the finish line together.
  • At the 28th Dolomitenmann, on September 12th, 2015, the handover of paragliders to mountain bikers was relocated from Leisach to Lienz in order to cope with the increased number of spectators. According to estimates by the organizers, there were around 45,000 spectators on the route.
  • In 2015, Gerald Rosenkranz from Graz was the first unicyclist to start the mountain bike stage.
  • After Manfred Rauch (mountain bike and mountain running) had to cancel his participation in the 29th Dolomitenmann, Wendelin Ortner (paragliding) is the only remaining participant who was at the start in all events.
  • The paragliding competition had to be canceled three times so far (1996, 1998 and 2007). Due to a rule change, a further cancellation is no longer planned. Instead, it will either be held on a shortened route (2008 and 2017 - only the second stage from Moosalm), or the athletes will have to conquer at least part of it continuously. If an application is rejected or if no physical handover can take place, the next discipline is started according to the Gundersen method .
  • Red Bull Elements is a relay competition based on the Dolomitenmann. The competition in the disciplines of rowing , trail running , paragliding and mountain biking has been held annually in Annecy since 2011 .
  • As with most Red Bull events, the Wings for Life Foundation is also advertised here. Prominent starters for the Wings for Life Team are Andreas Goldberger (mountain run), Benjamin Karl (mountain bike) and, most recently, Marcel Hirscher (white water kayak).
Furthermore begin in wounded Team Wings for Life Heroes all physically impaired athletes.
  • Petro Mamu was subsequently revoked his 5th victory in the individual ranking at the 30th Dolomitenmann 2017 after he was proven doping. He also lost his world champion title.
