Ekkehard W. Bornträger

Ekkehard Wolfgang Bornträger (* 1958 in Wuppertal ) is a Swiss historian ( Greece , the Balkans , Eastern Europe , the Baltic States ) and a neo-Greekist .

Bornträger studied Modern History , Neo-Greek Studies , Balto - Slavic Studies and English Philology at the Universities of Friborg , Switzerland , and Bern and received her doctorate in 1991 with a dissertation on Catherine II . As a result, he accepted a postdoctoral fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation , Bern, and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche , Rome , combined with study visits to Greece and Italy . In addition to independent research and translation work as well as language training in Albanian and Romanian , Bornträger has held various teaching positions, in particular since 1998 for modern Greek language and culture at the University of Friborg (Switzerland), and since 2007/2008 introductory events on Balkan studies as well as Lithuanian language and regional studies . From 2005 to 2007 he represented the chair for Neo-Greek Studies at the University of Mainz (FASK Germersheim ), which had become vacant after Hans Ruge's retirement , where he also conducted a pilot course in Albanian; in addition, he had a lectureship in Eastern European history at the University of Mannheim . He is currently a professor at the Institute for Slavic Languages and Literatures at the Universities of Friborg (Switzerland) and Bern, and holds the chair in Neo-Greek Studies at the University of Geneva.

Research focuses on the history of Greece and the Balkans as well as Eastern Europe as a whole, with particular attention to the Baltic region , nationality and language policy and cultural and language contact in these areas, as well as translation studies (translation geography ), lexicostatistics and neo-Greek lexicography in the form of phraseology .
