Ekkhard Schmidt-Opper
Ekkhard Schmidt-Opper (born January 29, 1961 in Dornburg-Frickhofen ) is a former German hockey player and two-time Olympic participant. He played a total of 246 times for the German national hockey team . He is now the youth hockey coach at MTV Kronberg.
Career
The midfielder Ekkhard Schmidt-Opper was with the Limburger HC 1984 German championship in field hockey and 1985 in indoor hockey. In 1987, after a dispute with coach Paul Lissek , he moved with seven other players to SC 1880 Frankfurt , with whom he also became German champions in 1989.
Schmidt-Opper made his debut in the national team in 1979. His first major success was winning the European Indoor Championships in 1980. At the 1981/1982 World Championships in Bombay, the German team reached the final, where they lost 1: 3 to the Pakistani selection. After bronze at the European Championship in 1983, he went to Los Angeles as a playmaker for the German team at the 1984 Olympic Games . In the final, the German team faced the Pakistani team again. After regular time ended 1-1, Pakistan made it 2-1 in extra time.
At the 1986 World Cup in London, Schmidt-Opper won bronze with the German team, just like a year later at the European Championship. In 1988 Schmidt-Opper was part of the winning team at the European Indoor Championships. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, the German team won Group B in the preliminary round, beating Great Britain 2-1. In the final, these two teams faced each other again and the British won 3-1, the German goal in the final was scored by Heiner Dopp . At the 1990 World Cup , Schmidt-Opper finished fourth with the national team.
After the end of his career, Schmidt-Opper took over his parents' business in Frickhofen, a civil engineering company with around 100 employees.
Since May 2018 he has been training the youth hockey team at MTV Kronberg.
