El Altar ( Kichwa : Kapak Urku , from Quechua Qhapaq Urqu "mighty mountain", "royal mountain") is a 5319 meter high inactive stratovolcano of the Andes in the west of the Sangay National Park in Ecuador ( Chimborazo province ), approx. 170 km south of the Capital Quito . It originated in the Pliocene and the Pleistocene . Its caldera is to the west.

Nine of its peaks are over 5000 meters high. At an altitude of 4200 meters there is a crater lake called Laguna Collanes or Laguna Amarilla. The last eruption is unknown, but it probably occurred before 1460.
