El Hadji Sy , El Hadj Sy , also El Hadj Moussa Babacar Sy (born September 9, 1954 in Dakar ) is a Senegalese activist , painter , conceptual artist , art theorist and curator .

Life

Sy studied at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts in Dakar. He belongs to the second generation of Senegalese artists who make up the École de Dakar . This school was founded during the independence efforts of the Francophone countries in Africa in 1960. In confrontation with the cultural regime of Léopold Sédar Senghor, he painted with his feet for 10 years, until the 1970s. With the filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambéty , the playwright Youssoufa Dione and others, he founded the Laboratoire Agit-Art group and the Village des Arts de Dakar in 1974 . Sy gave the representation of the human body in painting a place in Senegalese art. During this time he founded the art collective Laboratoire Agit` Art , Teng and Huit Facettes and occupied the houses of French colonialists and Chinese communists. Since the mid-1980s he has been using jute rice sacks as a painting base for his black tar paints and also applies candle wax. His collages are large-format and are often hung in the room.

Together with the German educationalist Friedrich Axt , who conducts research in Senegal , Sy wrote the first anthology on contemporary sculpture in Senegal. In 1989 Sy first exhibited at the Museum of Ethnology in Frankfurt am Main , Germany.

El Hadji Sy lives in Dakar.

His artistic position is free from any isolation genealogy . The perception of his works is a challenge in the context of ethnographic collections from Senegal. Sy describes the Senegalese artifacts as pitfalls of conscience and speaks openly of the horror emanating from these ethnological collections. A semantic processing is necessary for Sy. The artistic agnostic breaks the anthological boundaries of Senegalese contemporary art and folk art, questions the viewer's attitude and struggles between engagement in the Senegalese community and solitary self-humility. Sy raises the question of how to socialize the production of the mind . In his more recent work, Sy deals with the pressing issues in post-colonial Senegal.

At documenta 14 2017 in Kassel , he took part in the Disso-Concertation from 2016 in the documenta hall , consisting of painting and multimedia installation .
