El Palà de Torroella , also known as Palà Vell , is a town in the Vall de Cardener between Súria and Cardona , on the left bank of the Cardener river. It belongs to the municipality of Navàs . The village was founded in the late 19th century.
history
In 1876, Joan Palà i Valls built a spinning and weaving mill in the area of El Palà de Torroella . For the workers he also built an apartment block with 44 apartments, consisting of 11 apartment buildings with two floors. In addition, he also built a block with grocery stores, a café and a school. A chapel was built as early as 1879. In 1885 the factory was badly damaged by fire, but was completely rebuilt.
Joan Palà i Claret (1876–1960) took over his uncle's factory, it was modernized and more could be produced. This meant that more workers were needed and more houses had to be built. A cinema, a ballroom and a casino will also be built. On October 26, 1918, the village was awarded the title of supplier to the royal family .
During the Spanish Civil War , the factory was collectivized. After the war, a new church was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. In 1971 the factory had to be closed for economic reasons.

Stumbling block
In April 2015 the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig laid in front of the house Ctra. de Cardona 7 a stumbling block for Josep Soler Torrens. He was born in 1909, went into exile in France in 1939, was arrested there on June 1, 1940 and deported to Mauthausen concentration camp in 1941. Around 7,000 Spaniards were imprisoned there and sentenced to forced labor, more than half of them were murdered by the Nazi regime, including Josep Soler Torrens on December 25, 1941 in the Mauthausen subcamp Gusen .

In El Pala de Torroella is one of the top restaurants in all of Spain: TO [+], directed by David García Cantero . The name refers to To (mas), the plus sign means mas in Catalan and Spanish . David García Cantero was the youngest participant and won the second season of the Spanish TV competition Top Chef on Antena 3 .
