From July 1 to October 30, 2016, the exhibition in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin was visited by over 150,000 people. From November 25th to March 26th, 2017, the exhibition was entitled Spain's Golden Age. The Velázquez era can be seen in painting and sculpture in the Kunsthalle Munich .

theme

The exhibition was dedicated to the Siglo de Oro of Spain. The focus was on the art centers of Toledo , Valencia , Seville and Madrid in the 17th century. At that time, Spain experienced a loss of political power. In response to this political and social change, Spanish artists, supported by the Spanish royal family, the nobility and the Catholic Church, created a new visual language that was intended to demonstrate strength and stability as an instrument of political propaganda. During this time, works of art were created that are still regarded today as masterpieces of Spanish art. The exhibition was primarily devoted to works of painting and sculpture in their social and political context. Over 130 works by the famous artists Diego Velázquez , El Greco , Francisco de Zurbarán and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo , as well as less well-known artists such as Alonso Cano and Gregorio Fernández were shown .

Structure of the exhibition

The exhibition was divided into three parts: In the first part, the most important art centers of painting and sculpture at the transition to the Baroque under the rule of Philip III. presented. The second part showed the masterpieces of Siglo de Oro and looked at them in connection with the goals of the political and religious elites under Philip IV. In the third part, the focus was on the artists of the high baroque period in Madrid in the context of demographic, economic and political developments.

organization

The exhibition was conceived by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in cooperation with the Kunsthalle München. The collection of the Berlin Gemäldegalerie, which has an important collection of Spanish paintings, was supplemented by international loans, many of which had never been shown in Germany before. The exhibition was under the patronage of the Spanish King Felipe VI. and the German President Joachim Gauck .

Reviews

“The Berlin Gemäldegalerie has achieved something great. She has put together works of art - paintings, sculptures and drawings - from collections of the Spanish Baroque from around the world in such a way that the viewer not only paves an educational trail through the epoch and its regional centers (Valencia, Madrid, Seville), but creates a world. "

“'El Siglo de Oro' provides a rollercoaster of emotions, sometimes courtly grandeur, sometimes torment of the soul. However, the exhibition does not convince with its emotionality, but with its clever staging, which demands a lot from the visitor who has to jump back and forth between the different cities, schools and artist clans. "
