El Tari

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

El Tari , actually Elias Tari (born April 17, 1926 in Sawu , Dutch East Indies , † April 29, 1978 in Kupang , West Timor, Indonesia ) was an Indonesian politician and officer. From 1966 until his death he was governor of his Indonesian home province of Nusa Tenggara Timur with the rank of brigadier general.

Career

On the basis of Presidential Decree No. 104 of 1965 of May 6, 1965, El Tari became Deputy Governor of Nusa Tenggara Timur on July 18, 1965 under Governor William Johanes Lalamentik . On July 12, 1966, El Tari himself became governor.

The provincial parliament in Kupang decided in favor of El Tari as governor and against Colonel Paikun from West Java . Paikun had tried hard for the post and let his connections play in order to have a huge football stadium built in Kupang. El Tari had only the military rank of captain and was previously deputy military governor of the province.

Tari is said to have been a supporter of the idea of a united Greater Timor , which is why he supported the parties in Portuguese Timor in negotiations with Indonesia. Tari declared in September 1974 that he hoped that with a "fraternal concept" one could reunite Timor within Indonesia without sacrificing a person. The FRETILIN negotiator, José Ramos-Horta , who felt warmly welcomed by Tari, even suspected certain sympathies for an independent East Timor. From Tari's point of view, according to Ramos-Horta, this would have been a step on the way to Timor being completely independent of Indonesia. Ultimately, Indonesia occupied East Timor militarily in 1975. In the 24 years of occupation, East Timor remained as an independent province of Timor Timur, separated from the Indonesian West Timor.

El Tari was poisoned in 1978 when she was only 52 years old. It is believed that his separatist ideas were the reason for the murder.

The El Tari Airport was named the late governor honoring "El Tari airport."

family

El Tari's nephew was Louis Taolin , son of the Raja of Insana and agent of the Bakin military secret service . Taolin was a key figure in Operation Komodo to annex East Timor.
