Ela Bhatt
Ela Ramesh Bhatt (born September 7, 1933 in Ahmedabad , India ) is the founder of SEWA and was an Indian parliamentarian. She is an emeritus member of the Global Elders group .
biography
Ela Bhatt was born the second of three daughters in a medium-sized Indian family in Ahmedabad. Her maternal grandfather, who was arrested several times, was a doctor and followed Mahatma Gandhi . Her mother took part in the women's movement, her father had a prosperous law firm. Ela Ramesh spent her childhood in Surat . After Sarwajanik Girls High School from 1940 to 1948, she graduated from Gujarat University in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in English. She studied law and received a gold medal in 1954 for her work on Hindu law. She was not satisfied with the English class at Shrimati Nathibai Damodardas Thackersey Women's University in Bombay . She moved to the legal department of the textile workers' association in Ahmedabad. In 1968 she took over the management of their women's department. In 1972 she founded the Self Employed Women's Association, SEWA, a union for self-employed women, which today has close to 1 million members. It organizes self-employed women who do not have a regular income or social benefits in India. The aim is to get women into full-fledged work. Bhatt u. a. the sister organization Shree Mahila Sewa Sahakari Bank Ltd. In 1979 she co-founded the President of Women's World Banking .
From 1986 to 1988 Bhatt was appointed by the Indian President as a member of the upper house of the Indian Parliament, the Rajya Sabha .
In 2007 she was appointed a founding member of Global Elders . Today she is an emeritus member of the group .
Bhatt has been married to Ramesh Bhatt since 1956. They have two children, Amimayi (* 1958) and Mihir (* 1959).
