The Elbe bridge at Barby is a 757 m long railway bridge with a footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists. The structure is near Barby and spans the Elbe at river kilometer 294.1 and the Nuthe in the foreland area just before its mouth. It was built in the 1870s as part of the Berlin – Blankenheim line , a section of the so-called Kanonenbahn .
history
On December 18, 1872, a law was presented to the Prussian state parliament approving the taking up of a loan in the amount of 120 million talers (360 million marks ). Among other things, this was intended for the construction of a line from Berlin to Wetzlar , which was to cost 50.75 million talers (152.25 million marks). On June 11, 1873 the law came into force.
In particular, Adolph von Dietze, the tenant of the Barby domain and MP for the Reichstag, successfully campaigned for a route with an Elbe crossing at Barby, below the mouth of the Saale . The actual bridge construction with the production of the foundations and substructures began after the groundbreaking on July 15, 1875. Gutehoffnungshütte Oberhausen built the double-track iron bridge superstructure with a 1.25 meter wide public footpath . The assembly of the superstructures followed from September 1876. With the test loading on October 3, 1877, the structure was completed. The cost was 2.165 million marks. The double-track line went into operation on April 15, 1879.
From May 1908 to December 1909, the wrought-iron superstructures were replaced by new steel bridge girders at the Elbe bridge and the approximately 150-meter-long flood bridge at Flötz due to the increased train mass and increased axle loads . In addition, the bridge towers that were demolished to replace the superstructures were rebuilt. In the 2.426 million mark expensive measure, an average of 220 workers built a total of 4671 tons of steel. The individual superstructures were replaced in two hour breaks by sliding the new building in from the side. Construction work was completed in October 1911 when the new bridge towers were built. Three workers were killed during the work.
During the Second World War , platforms for anti-aircraft guns were built on the western bridge towers . The bridge keeper's houses at the eastern end of the bridge were raised by two floors and also provided with platforms for anti-aircraft guns. On April 12, 1945, German troops blew up the river pillar in front of the approaching US troops, which also severely destroyed the two superstructures on top. Then the 83rd US Infantry Division built a pontoon bridge about two kilometers south of the destroyed railway bridge . The Truman Bridge was completed on April 13, 1945 and was used to expand a bridgehead that reached as far as Zerbst .
After the bridge debris had been cleared, the reconstruction of the river pillar began in the summer of 1947. The two destroyed superstructures were replaced by a single-track temporary steel superstructure from the Wehrmacht's "Roth-Waagner" system. On March 1, 1948, the first train ran on the remaining Blankenheim – Berlin track over the structure that had been restored for 1.66 million Reichsmarks . Due to the makeshift superstructure, there was a speed limit of 30 km / h.
In 1949, the city of Barby signed a contract with the Deutsche Reichsbahn for the use of the footpath on the southern side of the Elbe bridge, which has been automatically extended for another year since 1953 with a six-month notice period.
After major maintenance measures in 1956 and 1965, extensive repairs to the bridge followed between 1973 and 1976. The temporary superstructure was replaced by two new, again single-track superstructures, each weighing 285 tons, during an 18-day line closure. For the remaining superstructures, a new carriageway was built in the line axis with new carriageway girders. The work was completed at the end of 1976.
In 1992 and 1993, as part of preparatory work for a route electrification, the portal transverse bars of the superstructures of the river bridge were converted. On August 4, 2004, the Federal Railway Authority approved the closure of the Güterglück - Barby railway line, which on December 12, 2004 was followed by the permanent suspension of railway operations on the bridge with the timetable change.
The headroom under the bridge is around one meter too low for three-layer container transport on the Elbe. Therefore, the Waterways and Shipping Directorate East examined the ownership and maintenance obligations as well as the possibility of dismantling the bridge in 2011. In 2013, the cost of lifting a 65-meter-long bridge segment over the fairway was estimated at 200,000 euros. At that time, Deutsche Bahn did not yet have any concrete plans for the future, for maintaining or demolishing the bridge.
In February 2014 it became known that Deutsche Bahn had sold the bridge to an undisclosed new owner. In the purchase agreement, it was agreed that Deutsche Bahn would apply to the Federal Railway Authority by April 15, 2014 for the "dismantling of the track systems and the Elbe bridge" . The city protested and referred to the bridge's monument status. The new owner is the Saxon Institute for Regional Economics and Energy (Sire) AG , which has also bought additional parts of the Güterglück – Güsten railway line and has already dismantled the southern section. Around 4,700 signatures were collected for the receipt and a bridge festival was held again.
construction
The 757.45 meter long bridge has 16 openings, each of which is spanned by single- span girders. The ten flood bridges over the foreland area on the eastern side of the Elbe have 35.0 meter spacing between the pillars and 33.76 meters span as well as two riveted truss girders arranged laterally above the carriageway . They are designed for two tracks. The river bridge has a pillar axis spacing of 67.6 meters and consists of six superstructures, each with a span of 65.5 meters, which are designed as semi-parabolic girders with a curved upper flange. The former double-track girders from 1910 are riveted. The two narrower superstructures built in 1976 can accommodate a track and have bolted connections.
The masonry river pillars have dimensions of 4.0 meters in the longitudinal direction of the bridge and 14.5 meters perpendicular to it. The flood piers are 2.6 meters and 12 meters respectively. The pillars are built on sink wells that reach a depth of 7.0 meters below the river bed.
