Electrify America (sometimes also called electrify america) is a company founded in 2017 whose goal is to build a network of charging stations for electric cars in the USA over a period of ten years. Its foundation went to the diesel scandal by Volkswagen back. In a settlement , VW pledged to invest a total of two billion US dollars , including 800 million dollars in California alone . A total of 2000 charging points are to be created at almost 500 locations .

In 2018, Electrify America and Volkswagen Group Canada founded Electrify Canada to operate electric charging stations in Canada from 2019.

Scheduling and organization

The network is set up in four 30-month phases (cycles). In the first phase (January 2017 to June 2019) the focus is on the business development of the company and public relations . In the following three phases, customers and citizens as well as government institutions can make suggestions for optimizing and further expanding the network. These are currently (December 2018) and with a view to the second phase: 1. Specific locations for charging stations, 2. Supplier participations, 3. Notes on events that Electrify America should take into account. In the last stage of expansion, the network should be larger than the Tesla supercharger network . Alaska and Hawaii have so far been exempted from the plans ( 49-state plan ). In April 2018 it was announced that in a cooperation with Walmart, more than 100 supermarkets in 34 US states are to be equipped with four to 10 charging points each from Electrify America, 80% of which will be on highways. In June 2019, ChargePoint and Electrify America issued a declaration that should enable their customers to charge their vehicles at the charging stations of the other provider with existing login data ( roaming agreement). The total number of charging points from both providers is 30,000 at the time of the declaration

Technical details

The charging stations are exclusively equipped with non- proprietary charging plugs ( SAE J1772 , CHAdeMO , CCS ) and enable 50 to 350 kW charging power. Billing takes place via a dedicated app . In addition to a base price of one dollar per charging process, between 30 and 35 US cents per minute are charged, and 40 cents / minute if a charging station is blocked. All CCS columns are prepared for billing according to ISO 15118 ( Plug and Charge ).

In principle, the charging stations are available for vehicles of all brands. In September 2018, Audi USA announced that buyers of their electric SUV e-tron will receive 1,000 kWh of credit from Electrify America, which expires after four years. Shortly afterwards, Lucid Motors announced that there was an official cooperation with Electrify America - but without giving any further details.
