The Elektrizitätswerk Obwalden (EWO), based in Kerns, is an electricity supply company in the canton of Obwalden . The company, organized under public law, is owned by the canton of Obwalden and its seven municipalities. It employs around 130 people, 15 of whom are apprentices .
Emergence
The Obwalden electricity works emerged from the Kerns electricity works founded in 1905. A contract from 1955 governed the establishment of the Obwaldens power station, the construction of the Melchsee- Frutt power station and the transfer of the Kerns power station to the canton.
On January 1, 1965, the Obwalden electricity company took over the entire distribution systems in the communities of Lungern , Giswil , Sachseln , Kerns, Sarnen , Alpnach and Engelberg, as well as material, vehicles, facilities and current energy supply contracts.
Business areas
- Production and distribution of electrical energy and district heating from primarily renewable energy sources
- Electrical installation work
- Supply of data networks
As a public-sector company, the EWO has a contract to supply electrical energy in the canton of Obwalden. It supplies around 20,000 households and 4,500 companies. To this end, it operates its own power distribution network , several power plants and two combined heating systems in Kerns and Lungern.
Power plants
The EWO operates the following power plants:
- the Hugschwendi hydropower plant , which uses water from the Melchsee-Frutt catchment area .
- the Unteraa hydropower plant , in which water from the Lungerersee and from the Great Melchaa and the Little Melchaa is turbined.
- a photovoltaic system on the roof of the Obwalden Cantonal School in Sarnen and other small power plants.
The Wisserlen and Kernmatt power plants will continue to be operated by the Kerns municipal electricity company, which is an administrative branch of the Kerns corporation . A total of around 130 small power plants in Obwalden are connected to the EWO network, which are operated by companies, cooperatives and corporations.
