The Unteraa power plant (formerly the Lungerersee or Lungererseewerk power plant ) is a hydropower plant on the Lungerersee in the area of the municipality of Giswil , which was built in 1921 by the Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke (CKW).

history

The Elektrizitätswerk Obwalden (EWO) has operated this power plant since 1982 and generates electricity from hydropower. In the power plant center, which went into operation in 1921, the machinery was shut down in 1994. Since then, it has been used as an exhibition space for demonstrations and private and public events under the name of Alte Kraftwerkzentrale Turbine Giswil .

The new Unteraa power plant center, expanded as a cavern, was put into operation in 1994. The Elektrizitätswerk Obwalden (EWO) uses the gradient between the Lungerersee and the valley floor in Giswil, from where the water flows via Giswiler Aa into the Sarnersee .

In the same year, the machinery in the "old" headquarters was shut down. Since then, the large hall (90 × 12 × 16 meters) has been rented by the EWO under the name "Turbine" Giswil as an exhibition space, for demonstrations and for private and public events.

The net gradient of the system is 169 to 203 meters, depending on the level of the Lungerersee. At full load, a water volume of 32 m³ / s is turbine in the three Francis turbines. The catchment area of the power plant is 113 km².

The power plant is housed in an underground cavern center 87 m long and 26.5 m wide. There are two machines with an output of 24 MW each and one machine for feeding the 50 Hz three-phase network and one machine with an output of 6.5 MW for feeding the Zentralbahn . As a result, the Unteraa power plant is the only rail power plant that does not feed into the high-voltage network of the SBB , but directly into the catenary of the meter- gauge railway of the Zentralbahn Luzern-Sarnen-Meiringen.

The waste heat from the systems has been used in Giswil since 1994 in the environmentally friendly Giswil heating network, which has been supplemented by a wood chip heating system from the cooperative heating network Kleinteil since 2007 .
