history

Since the 1990s, a broad layer of electronics service providers with different orientations has emerged, offering services in business and manufacturing processes and / or - depending on the business model  - increasingly also in engineering, logistics and after sales services . While the services and businesses just a few specialists initially were known, this new and got innovative branch of electronics industry in the wake of the ongoing digitization and the increasing demand for electronic components , systems and devices rapidly increase. The so-called E²MS business is now well known in the electronics industry and such services can now be found at all stages of the value chain of electronic components.

Partly emerged electronics service provider in the course of the increasing outsourcing, the so-called outsourcing , in the electronics industry . Outsourced electronics service companies such as Solectron Corporation in the USA, which specializes in electronic controls for solar technology and which has become one of the world's leading EMS companies, Flextronics International Ltd. in Singapore, or the internationally represented US-American Jabil Circuit, Inc. recorded rapid growth. In Germany, the medium-sized Katek GmbH in Grassau im Chiemgau, founded in 1983, developed under the umbrella of the Kathrein Group into one of the largest German electronics service providers .

The E²MS Award

A benchmark competition has been held especially for producers of electronic assemblies in Germany , Austria and Switzerland since 2001 , the Electronic Engineering and Manufacturing Services Award ( E²MS Award for short ), in which, among other things, the title Electronics Service Provider of the Year is awarded . The award is a joint initiative of the Fachverband Elektronik-Design eV (FED), the Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie (ZVEI) and the trade journal Elektronikpraxis . Since the competition took place annually from 2001 to 2005, it has been held every two years since then. While a total of 120 electronics service providers took part from 2001 to 2007, there were already 50 applicants for the award in 2013 alone, which reflects the development of the industry.

The winners include electronics service providers Appel Elektronik in Heuchelheim near Gießen (2011), Kathrein Sachsen in Mühlau near Chemnitz (2009), Seidel Elektronik in Deutschlandsberg in Austria (2013), Sumida Lehesten in Lehesten in the Thuringian Forest (2011, 2013) , TQ-Systems in Seefeld in Upper Bavaria (2002, 2004, 2007, 2011, 2013; special award 2009) and Zollner Electronics in Zandt in Upper Palatinate (2011, 2013).
