Jabil Circuit Inc. is a US contract manufacturer for electronics. With sales of 17.9 billion USD (15 billion euros ) in fiscal year 2015, one of the largest companies in the electronics manufacturing ( EMS in the world).
history
Jabil Circuit was founded in Detroit in 1966 by James Golden and Bill Morean as a repair company and manufacturer of printed circuit boards . The company name is based on the first letters of the two founders (Ja & Bil), as well as the English word for electrical circuits , circuit . Business was sluggish at first and the company had sales of less than $ 50,000 a year. In 1979, however, Jabil was able to suddenly improve its sales with a large order from the American car manufacturer General Motors . Production was transformed from predominantly manual work more and more towards factory automation .
In 1982, the company's headquarters were relocated from Detroit to Saint Petersburg in the US state of Florida . This step was completed after Jabil received a major order from IBM , which has a location in the Florida city of Boca Raton . Sales at this point were approximately USD 100 million. During the 1980s, the company also underwent a change and specialized entirely in the business as an original equipment manufacturer in the electronics manufacturing services sector . As such, Jabil produced assemblies for well-known manufacturers, but also designed and tested some of them themselves.
In 1993 the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange .
