Elena Filipovic

Elena Filipovic (* 1972 in Los Angeles ) is a curator and holds a PhD in art history . After working as a curator at the Wiels - Center for Contemporary Art from 2009 to 2014 , she has been the first female director of the Kunsthalle Basel since 2014 .

Life

Filipovic holds a bachelor's degree in English from Cornell University and a PhD in art history from Princeton University in 2013 with a PhD on Marcel Duchamp . After a curatorial assistant to Hans-Ulrich Obrist at the Musée D'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris , she was co-curator of the “Utopia Station” section at the Venice Biennale in 2003 . In 2008 she curated the 5th Berlin Biennale “When Things Cast No Shadow” together with the curator Adam Szymczyk . From 2009 to 2014 she was chief curator at the Wiels - Center for Contemporary Art in Brussels . In 2014 Elena Filipovic was appointed as the first director of the Kunsthalle Basel . Overall, she curated numerous group and solo exhibitions (including on Marcel Duchamp, Félix Gonzalez-Torres , Alina Szapocznikow , Franz Erhard Walther , Klara Lidén , Anicka Yi , Mark Leckey , Vincent Meessen , Anne Imhof , Lynette Yiadom-Boakye , Michael E. Smith , Yuri Ancarani , Sadie Benning , Maria Loboda , Shahryar Nashat and Daniel Dewar & Grégory Gicquel ).
