Elena Loewenthal
Elena Loewenthal (born January 22, 1960 in Turin ) is a Jewish Italian writer, journalist, editor and translator from Hebrew .
Life
Elena Loewenthal studied literature and history at the University of Turin and completed her Italian doctorate in 1983 with a dissertation on La storiografia ebraica altomedievale. II Sepher Josippon, l'Italia Meridionale e la storia romana from. At the publishing house Adelphi Edizioni she publishes Louis Ginzberg's six-volume The Legends of the Jews in Italian translation. Loewenthal has so far translated several works into Italian from modern Israeli literature, partly in cooperation with other translators: Amos Oz ; David Grossman ; Meir Shalev ; Yoram Kaniuk ; Aharon Appelfeld ; Zeruya Shalev and also so far individual works by Gershom Scholem , Uri Orlev , Orly Castel-Bloom , Sayed Kashua , Eshkol Nevo , Avraham Burg , Shmuel Yosef Agnon , as well as by many other authors, including US authors.
Loewenthal writes articles on current cultural-political issues in the Turin daily La Stampa and its weekend supplement Tuttolibri. She is a lecturer in Jewish history at the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan.
In 1997 she received the Premio Andersen for I bottoni del Signor Montefiore e altre storie ebraiche and in 2003 her first novel Lo strappo dell'anima was awarded the Premio Grinzane Cavour for young authors .
Loewenthal lives in Rivoli and has a daughter.
