The Eleonoren-Gymnasium ( Elo for short ) is one of the three high schools in the Rhine-Hessian city of Worms . It is named after the Grand Duchess Eleonore of Hessen-Darmstadt .

history

The grammar school was founded in 1874 as a non-denominational high school for girls on the private initiative of several citizens of Worms. At that time it was the fourth girls' school next to the three existing, denominationally separate, private institutes. Initially located at today's Weckerlingplatz, the school moved to today's Hagenstrasse in 1891 after merging with the Institutes for Protestant and Jewish Girls.

In 1904, the new building on the then Wasserturmplatz , which had long been in prospect, could begin, the building was inaugurated on October 18, 1906. Since that day the school has officially been named Grand Duchess Eleonore von Hessen-Darmstadt .

The school building was designed by the Wörrstadt architect Georg Metzler and has been expanded and modernized several times. Originally, the corner of the building with the main entrance was crowned by a slim tower, which was not rebuilt after damage in the Second World War. Parts of the school building are under monument protection .

In the period from 1945 onwards, the building was occupied by the city administration and the police, and the gym (now the auditorium ) was converted into a Roxy cinema. Schools therefore first took place in the upper secondary school , and from 1951 in the Neusatz school . It was not until 1963 that the school community was able to return to the building complex on Karlsplatz.

In 1971 the time as an all-girls school ended with the introduction of co-education . The introduction of the reformed Rhineland-Palatinate upper secondary school, MSS , began in 1975.

The general renovation in the 1991/1992 school year is remarkable, as a result of which all of the lessons had to be distributed across four schools in the city. With the renovation and modernization, the extensions from the 1960s and 1970s were increased with classrooms and a new school library, and the built-in parts of the auditorium from the days of cinema operation were removed.

The school today

In the 2018/2019 school year, 943 pupils attended the Eleonoren Gymnasium. Rita Lodwig has been the headmistress since June 2, 2014. From 2005 to 2011 she was the deputy headmistress of the Worms Eleonoren-Gymnasium and from 2011 to 2014 the headmistress of the Wilhelm-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium in Ludwigshafen am Rhein .
