Elias Deemer

Elias Deemer (born January 3, 1838 in Durham , Bucks County , Pennsylvania , †  March 29, 1918 in Williamsport , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1907 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elias Deemer attended both public and private schools. He began trading in Lycoming County and Philadelphia in 1860 . During the initial phase of the Civil War , he served as a common soldier in the Union Army between July 1861 and May 1862 . Then he had to quit for health reasons. In 1862 he moved to Milford , New Jersey , where he started business. From 1868 he lived in Williamsport, where he made considerable wealth in the lumber business. There he also embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1888 to 1890 he was chairman of the local council. Deemer also got into the banking business and was president of Williamsport National Bank from 1893 until his death . He was also involved in some newspapers. In June 1896 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in St. Louis , at which William McKinley was nominated as a candidate for president.

In the 1900 congressional election , Deemer was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Horace Billings Packer on March 4, 1901 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1907 . Since 1903 he represented there as the successor to Charles Frederick Wright the 15th district of his state. In 1906 he was not re-elected.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Elias Deemer worked in the wood business in addition to his work as bank president in Pennsylvania and in the city of Deemer in the state of Mississippi , which he founded. In 1908 he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died on March 29, 1918 in Williamsport, where he was also buried.
