Elias Greuter the Elder

Elias Greuter the Elder (also: Greither, Greiter, Greiterer, Kreitter, Kreuter) (* 1569 or 1570 in Weilheim in Upper Bavaria ; † between November 9th and 11th 1646 there ) was a Bavarian painter of the Baroque period .

The first known mention of the painter comes from 1591, when he acquired citizenship in Weilheim and painted the cemetery church of St. Salvator and Sebastian (Betbergkapelle) in Weilheim using Secco technology. Presumably he was a student of Christian Schwarz. Greuter achieved special importance as the first early Baroque painter in Bavaria who painted a church with a spacious ceiling fresco .

His sons were the painters Elias Greuter the Younger and Johann Greuter .
