Elias Wessén

Elias Gustaf Adolf Wessén (born April 15, 1889 in Linderås, Jönköpings län ; † January 30, 1981 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish linguist and professor of North Germanic languages at Stockholm University between 1928 and 1956.

Life

In his first works, Wessén dealt with morphological questions of Germanic languages , onomasiology and Germanic mythologies . He published parts of Sveriges runinskrifter (runes in Sweden, e.g. rune stone from Salmunge ), edited medieval texts and translated medieval Swedish national laws together with Åke Holmbäck .

He also published the work Svensk språkhistoria (Swedish language history) and a grammatical explanation of modern Swedish entitled Vårt svenska språk (Our Swedish language) in three volumes .

In 1944 he initiated the establishment of the institute Nämnden för Svensk Språkvård, which was later renamed Språkrådet (Swedish Language Council).

Wessén was a member of the Swedish Academy between 1947 and 1981 (seat 16).
