Elida Maria Szarota

Elida Maria Szarota (born November 22, 1904 in Paris ; † 1994 ) was a professor at the University of Warsaw , Germanist, literary historian, author of many German language manuals.

Elida Maria Szarota was the daughter of Marceli Szarota (1876–1951) and Eleonore Kalkowska (1883–1937), sister of the economist Ralph Szarota (1906–1994), wife of Rafał Marceli Blüth (1891–1939), mother of Tomasz Szarota (* 1940). She also used the double name Szarota-Blüthowa .

She was born in Paris , where her mother began studying science at the Sorbonne in 1901 . She studied German and Romance languages ​​at the same university. She continued her studies at universities in Geneva , Berlin and Frankfurt am Main , where she received her doctorate in 1934 with a treatise on the Benedictine monk Gautier de Coincy .

In November 1939, her husband was murdered in one of the first mass executions in Warsaw. Two months later she gave birth to her son Tomasz.

After the Second World War she worked as a foreign language lecturer in Warsaw. In 1957 she received her habilitation at the Humboldt University in Berlin with the treatise: Lessing's Laokoon. A martial arts script for realistic art and poetry .

In 1960 she was appointed lecturer at the Chair of Germanic Philology at the University of Warsaw . 1972–1974 she was director of the Institute for German Studies and the Chair of Literary Studies.
