Elin Cleopatra Danielson-Gambogi (born September 3, 1861 in Noormarkku , † December 31, 1919 in Livorno ) was a Finnish-Swedish painter who was primarily known for realistic portraits. Together with Helene Schjerfbeck, she belonged to the first generation of Finnish artists who had an academic education .

Life

Danielson-Gambogi's family had Swedish roots. Her parents were Karl Emil Danielson and Rosa Amalia Gestrin. The father committed suicide in 1871, leaving the family in financial need. The mother was only able to enable her daughter to be educated with the help of her brother.

From the age of 15 she studied fine arts at the Art Academy in Helsinki . In 1883 she went to Paris , where she studied at the Académie Colarossi with Raphaël Collin , among others . She spent the summer months in Brittany . A few years later she returned to Finland, where she lived with her family in Noormarkku and Pori . In 1881 she opened her own studio in Noormarkku. From 1880 to 1890 she worked as a teacher at various art schools in Finland and lived in the meantime, from 1886 to 1892, in the Finnish artists' colony Önningeby. In 1895 she received a scholarship in Florence . She married the Italian painter Raffaello Gambogi (1874–1943). The couple had several exhibitions together, including at the Paris World's Fair in 1900 .

In 1919 she fell seriously ill with pneumonia , to which she eventually succumbed. She was buried in Livorno.
