Elisabeth Freiin von Droste zu Hülshoff (born July 1, 1845 at Hülshoff Castle , † April 15, 1912 in Kevelaer ) was a German writer .

Life

Elisabeth (called: "Settchen") Freiin von Droste zu Hülshoff must not be confused with her famous aunt Anna Elisabeth, abbreviated: Annette von Droste-Hülshoff , whose godchild she was. She belonged to the 21st generation of her family and was the youngest of thirteen children of the landowner and politician Werner-Constantin von Droste zu Hülshoff (1798–1867) and his wife Caroline, née. Freiin von Wendt (noble family) -Papenhausen (1802-1881) was born and was a sister of Heinrich von Droste zu Hülshoff , Klemens Friedrich Freiherr Droste zu Hülshoff , Ferdinand von Droste zu Hülshoff and Carl Caspar von Droste zu Hülshoff . Elisabeth, who like her brothers also went hunting, remained unmarried and was u. a. active in handicrafts. Like her siblings, she campaigned for the Catholic Church in the Kulturkampf and lived in her final years in the pilgrimage site of Kevelaer, where she is said to have worked on mosaics . Together with her brother Heinrich, she worked towards the edition of the collected works of her aunt Annette from 1884/87, of which she was the editor and which the Jesuit priest Wilhelm Kreiten took care of .

Writing work

Elisabeth's poem Last Words , which was ascribed to Annette von Droste-Hülshoff a few years ago and adorned her grave in the Meersburg cemetery, became widely known :

Beloved, when my spirit is parted
So I cry no tears
For where I stay, there is peace
There an eternal day shines for me!

Where all earthly grief has disappeared Your
image shall not fade away from me
And relief for your wounds
I want to plead for your pain.

Nightly his seraphs wafts
The peace over the universe
So think no more of my hill
For from the stars I greet you!

Using the similarity of her name to her famous aunt, Elisabeth published novels and poems, also together with her brother Ferdinand.
