Werner-Constantin Freiherr Droste zu Hülshoff (born July 30, 1798 at Hülshoff Castle ; † February 23, 1867 ibid) was a member of the Westphalian provincial parliament , district deputy and landowner, member of the Order of Malta .

Life

Origin and education

Werner-Constantin (also Werner-Konstantin) Baron Droste zu Hülshoff was born as the elder son of Clemens-August II of Droste zu Hülshoff (1760–1826) and his wife Therese-Louise von Haxthausen at Hülshoff Castle. He was baptized on August 1, 1798 in the Church of St. Pantaleon in Roxel . He belonged to the 20th generation of his family and was a younger brother of Jenny von Droste zu Hülshoff and the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff . The youngest brother, Ferdinand, forester in the service of Anhalt, died young. Werner-Constantin attended the Paulinum grammar school in Münster and studied economics at the University of Bonn , where he lived with his step-uncle Werner von Haxthausen and where his cousin Clemens-August von Droste zu Hülshoff later became a professor.

Family and estates

On May 11, 1826 he married Karoline ("Line") Freiin von Wendt (1802-1881), who came from Gevelinghausen Castle and with whom he had twelve surviving children, including Heinrich von Droste zu Hülshoff , Clemens Friedrich Freiherr Droste zu Hülshoff , Ferdinand von Droste zu Hülshoff , Carl Caspar von Droste zu Hülshoff and Elisabeth von Droste zu Hülshoff . He had it early on through his step-grandmother Anna-Maria von Haxthausen, née. met von Wendt in Bökerhof Castle . With her he initially moved in to manage Wilkinghege Castle until, after his father's death in 1826, he took over the management of the Hülshoff family estate with the Rüschhaus . The circumstances of the time forced him to restructure the farm; he succeeded in expanding it by purchasing the neighboring estates of Haus Brock and Haus Vögeding. He had distinct hunting and historical interests.

Political activity

In spite of all church-conservative attitudes, Werner-Constantin enjoyed the confidence of the rural population, who in the revolutionary year of 1848 elected him to head a guard that they had formed to protect their property from vagabond revolutionaries. In 1828 and 1830/31 he was the representative of the Prince of Salm-Horstmar, 1833 to 1845, 1852 and 1856 as the representative of the Prince of Bentheim-Tecklenburg-Rheda and in 1858 as the representative of the Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein member of the Westphalian Provincial Parliament . From 1860 to 1865 Werner-Constantin von Droste zu Hülshoff was a member of the knighthood in the Münster-Ost constituency in the Westphalian provincial parliament . There he was a member of various commissions as well as the poor commission of the city of Munster. His conservative political attitude contributed, among other things, to the breakdown of relations between his sister Annette and the liberal-minded Levin Schücking , with whom he worked well on the publication of her works after her death. The poet Annette respected him as the head of the family, but sometimes commented critically on his statements in her letters.

Church work

In the dispute with the Prussian government over the Cologne event , Werner-Constantin showed solidarity with the imprisoned Bishop of Cologne Clemens August Droste zu Vischering , a distant relative. Together with his step -uncle August von Haxthausen , he tried to revive the German branch of the Order of Malta - after his great-great-great-great-great-uncle, Gottfried Droste zu Vischering (Grand Prior) had been a leading knight of the order. Werner-Constantin donated a crucifixion group from the workshop of Johann Wilhelm Gröninger to the parish of St. Pantaleon in Roxel for the cemetery ; a copy made in 1938 is still in the new cemetery in Roxel.

Importance to his family

Werner-Constantin took care of the maintenance of his widowed mother and the initially or permanently unmarried sisters Jenny and Annette, who mainly lived at Haus Rüschhaus , as well as careful upbringing and education for all of his children. He not only became the progenitor of all branches of the family that went into the 20th and 21st centuries, but also collected documents on family history, which testifies to a good knowledge of Latin . He was unable to complete the family story he had begun and to which he wrote the preface.

“I processed the same from documents that I brought together over the long period of about 30 years from all possible archives in the country after reading through many 1000 documents. It is therefore correct to the extent that it is at all possible to set up the history of a family that did not play a major role in the history of the country ... Only very few families of the lower nobility can continue their family trees into the beginning of the 13th century and only a few may succeed in reaching higher. "The family history was published after the death of Werner-Constantin by the chaplain of Hülshoff, J. Holsenbürger. This also includes the warning that Werner-Constantin to his children judges: "Therefore I also exhort you to love and unity with one another; for if you believe it will be my successor in the estates, if he is to be the continuation of the family, as is necessary, have to contend with worries without number, even in the event that the demands of his siblings are standardized to the cheap measure become. Second, you can learn from this story that your ancestors were good, godly people. They were also well versed in the sciences from the earliest times, from which you too can take an example "

progeny

All branches of the Droste zu Hülshoff family dating back to the 20th and 21st centuries go back to Werner-Constantin . His second son Clemens Friedrich Droste zu Hülshoff inherited Haus Stapel , which passed into the Raitz von Frentz family through the marriage of his granddaughter Ermengard . Today's namesake Bernd von Droste zu Hülshoff and Wilderich von Droste zu Hülshoff and their descendants descend from his son Heinrich von Droste zu Hülshoff (author) and his grandson Mariano Freiherr von Droste zu Hülshoff .
