Lineage and Life

Jutta Freiin von Droste zu Hülshoff (she called herself "Freifrau" during their two marriages) was the only child of Werner Freiherr von Droste zu Hülshoff (1872–1945), the last lord of the family at Gut Hülshoff and the ancillary estates, and his second wife Magda Mobitz (1892–1975). She was a granddaughter of Heinrich von Droste zu Hülshoff , while the other contemporary family members descended from his youngest brother Carl Caspar von Droste zu Hülshoff . In contrast to the rest of the family, she was baptized Protestant . In 1944, at the age of 18, she married the farmer Helfried Stromberg (1918–1980), with whom she had a son and three daughters, of whom her son did not survive.

On April 19, 1945, in the final weeks of the Second World War , her father died, so that at the age of 19 she inherited the family property that she managed with her mother and her husband. After her divorce, she married the architect Herbert Meinert (1921–1986) in 1979, who took her name after the changed family law.

She died on December 23, 2015 in a nursing home in Billerbeck, the burial took place on January 4, 2016 at Hülshoff Castle.

Public work

Hülshoff Castle

In the seventies of the 20th century, Jutta von Droste zu Hülshoff and her second husband gave the outer bailey of Burg Hülshoff such wide ditches that one can speak of an island location. She refurbished the restaurant, had the park fenced in and created a rose garden and a lawn for sunbathing. She organized guided tours and events at Hülshoff Castle and got involved a. a. in the Annette von Droste Society . After the war, Gut Hülshoff was temporarily regarded as a model agricultural business, over time it sold large parts of the estate, including the Rüschhaus house in 1979 , which the city of Münster acquired. With the help of her second husband, she gave the castle park and moat its present form. In 2012 she donated Hülshoff Castle, which had been in her family's possession for almost 600 years, with the associated library , art and furnishings as well as the remaining real estate, land, a park and all of the property as the material basis of the new Annette von Droste-Hulshoff Foundation , the foundation for an endowment possessed on the order of about 19 million euros. The Hülshoff Castle, donated by Jutta von Droste zu Hülshoff, is to be expanded as a literary center and museum by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe (LWL). In addition, the Droste research center with a special library is to be set up here. The manuscript archive, currently located in Münster, is also to move to Hülshoff Castle. In a third stage of expansion, the regional association is planning to set up a literature center in North Rhine-Westphalia in the castle.

Jutta von Droste zu Hülshoff was an adviser to the Annette von Droste Society .
