meaning
Ziegenhainer inheritance
Through her marriage to Albrecht I von Hohenlohe, Elisabeth von Hanau strengthened the family relationship between the Hohenlohe and Ziegenhain houses and the Hohenlohe inheritance claim to the county of Ziegenhain. This was originally created because her aunt Agnes von Ziegenhain († 1399), a sister of her mother, had married Kraft V. von Hohenlohe-Weikersheim .
In 1450 the last Count of Ziegenhain, Johann II , died without a male heir. The county of Ziegenhain had been a fiefdom of the Landgraviate of Hesse since 1437 . The Landgrave of Hesse therefore declared it to have fallen back as a Hessian fiefdom and occupied it militarily. The Hohenlohe family , on the other hand, asserted inheritance claims, which it also derived from Elisabeth von Hanau. It was the Hohenlohern, from Emperor Friedrich III. to be mortgaged with Ziegenhain as an imperial fief. The inheritance dispute lasted until 1495, led to legal and armed conflicts, but ended with the victory of Hesse: Ziegenhain remained with the Landgraviate of Hesse. Albrecht I, Elisabeth and their heirs retained the title of count, which had only come to the Hohenlohe family through the Ziegenhainer inheritance, and continued to use the six-pointed Ziegenhainer star in their coat of arms.
Lichtenberg inheritance
Elisabeth was Anna's grandmother through the first marriage of her daughter of the same name to Ludwig V. von Lichtenberg, who in turn was the parents of Anna von Lichtenberg (* 1442; † 1474). On September 3, 1458 Anna married Count Philipp I, the elder, of Hanau-Babenhausen . In 1480 Philipp I inherited, through her, for the children of their uncle, who died childless and the last male member of the von Lichtenberg family, Jakob von Lichtenberg , together with their sister, who was married to Count Simon Wecker von Zweibrücken-Bitsch , ever half of the dominion of Lichtenberg, which is mostly in Alsace . This territorial gain turned the until then modest county of Hanau-Babenhausen into a respectable territory, which in future bore the name of Grafschaft Hanau-Lichtenberg .
