Elisabeth of Sachsen-Altenburg (1826-1896)
Elisabeth Pauline Alexandrine of Saxony-Altenburg (born March 26, 1826 in Hildburghausen , † February 2, 1896 in Oldenburg ) was a princess of Saxony-Altenburg and by marriage Grand Duchess of Oldenburg .
Life
Elisabeth was the third of the four surviving daughters of Duke Joseph von Sachsen-Altenburg (1789–1868) from his marriage to Amalie (1799–1848), daughter of Duke Ludwig von Württemberg . Together with her sisters Marie , Therese and Alexandra she was trained by Carl Ludwig Nietzsche .
Elisabeth married the future Grand Duke Peter II of Oldenburg (1827–1900) on February 10, 1852 in Altenburg , who succeeded his father Paul Friedrich August in the government on February 27, 1853. On the occasion of the wedding, Paul Friedrich August paid 3,000 thalers to a charitable foundation, which he called the Elisabeth Foundation at his request . Funds from this foundation were later used to build the Elisabeth Children's Hospital , which opened in 1872 with 40 beds. Elisabeth also gave its name to the Oldenburg Deaconess House , founded in 1889 , which she also supported as patron.
The Colonie-Hunte-Ems-Kanal bog was named in honor of Grand Duchess Elisabethfehn in 1880 . In 1885 the hospital built in Birkenfeld / Nahe, in the Oldenburg principality of Birkenfeld, was named Elisabeth Hospital in her honor. The Elisabeth Foundation emerged from the hospital in 1966 .
