The Elisabeth Bridge (Hungarian Erzsébet-híd , Slovak Alžbetín most ) is a road bridge over the Danube that connects the two cities of Komárom in Hungary and Komárno in Slovakia.

location

The Elisabeth Bridge is located at river kilometer 1767.8. Upstream the next road bridge is in Medveďov at 1806.35 km and downstream in Esztergom the Maria Valeria Bridge at 1718.80 km. Upstream there is another railway bridge at 1770.40 km, the Komárom Barátság híd . A new road bridge is being built a few meters upstream from the railway bridge so that heavy goods vehicles no longer have to make long detours.

In Hungary the main road 13 leads from Kisbér to the bridge, in Slovakia road 64 leads from Nitra .

The bridge does not extend to the left bank, but begins on Elizabeth Island .

description

The Danube near Komárom was an important ferry point even in Roman times . Later there were also ship bridges , but they had to be dismantled during floods and ice .

The Elisabeth Bridge was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary outside of Budapest . Your design comes from the Hungarian civil engineer János Feketeházy . It was built in 1891 and 1892 and opened on September 1, 1892 under Emperor Franz Joseph and Prime Minister Gyula Szapáry .

The bridge is 415 m long in total. It has four openings with a pillar spacing of 104 m, which are spanned by sickle - shaped lattice girders with spans of 102 m. It is a total of 10.8 m wide, divided into a 5.8 m wide carriageway and 2.5 m wide sidewalks.

In 1914 the wooden carriageway was exchanged for prefabricated reinforced concrete slabs, which were replaced by a monolithic reinforced concrete slab in 1927.

In World War II it was blown up, but set up immediately after the war in 1946 again. Renovations were carried out in 1962 and 1980. Extensive renovations were carried out between 2004 and 2006.

meaning

In addition to the traffic connection between the two states of Hungary and Slovakia, the bridge also has a symbolic meaning, as the city of Komárno is a center of the Hungarian minority in southern Slovakia and the bridge thus symbolizes the connection with the mother country.

Interesting

  • The bridge is jointly owned by the two countries Slovakia and Hungary.
  • The bridge is alternately repainted by the two countries every ten years.
  • On August 21, 2009, the then incumbent Hungarian President László Sólyom was refused entry by the Slovak side, which led to the deterioration of Slovak-Hungarian relations.
