Elías Wessin y Wessin (born July 22, 1924 in Bayaguana , Dominican Republic , † April 18, 2009 in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic) was a brigadier general and politician of the Dominican Republic.

biography

After attending school in 1945, Wessin joined the army ( Fuerzas armadas de la República Dominicana ) and rose to become brigadier general . In September 1963, as a representative of the extreme political right, he was one of the leaders within the military who overthrew President Juan Bosch Gavino in a military coup .

In 1965 he played an important role during the Civil War and was a member of the Revolutionary Committee after the overthrow of President Donald Reid Cabral on April 25, 1965. Between April 28 and May 1, 1965, he was temporarily President of the Dominican Republic .

In 1970 he ran for the office of President, but was subject to the incumbent Joaquín Balaguer . In the presidential elections of 1982 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of president, but was defeated by Salvador Jorge Blanco .

On August 16, 1986, the newly elected President Joaquín Balaguer appointed him Minister of the Interior in his government. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was most recently Defense Minister in the cabinet from 1988 to 1989 .
