Elise Brunner (born August 15, 1851 in Kreuzlingen , † February 12, 1932 in Konstanz ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Elise Brunner was born on August 15, 1851 in Kreuzlingen. She showed an early interest in painting and gained her first artistic experience as a young woman with the landscape painter Bernhard Fries from Heidelberg . The influence of this teacher was to guide her later work. With a private study of portrait painting with Ernst Hildebrand in Karlsruhe , she expanded her knowledge. Numerous study trips enriched the expressive diversity of the painter, who remained connected to Lake Constance , whose landscape was her preferred subject. In 1889 she stayed at the "Adler" inn in Ermatingen, a place that was popular with artists. Elise Brunner, who remained unmarried, died on February 12, 1932 after a long illness at the age of 79.

Art historical appreciation

Elise Brunner: Portrait of Emilie Amann (Konstanz), 1881

Elise Brunner's beginnings in painting were determined by the soft and atmospheric style of her first teacher, Bernhard Fries. After private lessons with Ernst Hildebrand, her painting became clearer; her portraits show a lively way of modeling and precise apprehension of what is depicted.

Exhibitions

Elise Brunner took part in exhibitions and cultural events in the Lake Constance area during her artistic career. Among other things, she exhibited at the Swiss Art Exhibition in Constance in 1885 and 1878. The Swiss art exhibitions took place as repetitive events over a longer period of time. The Constance artists Berta Dietsche and Amalie Vanotti , who both exhibited in Constance and Winterthur , were also involved. Throughout their lives, the three artists have been involved in various exhibitions of the Swiss Art Association over several decades.

Between May 9 and August 30, 2020, Elise Brunner's work will be on display as part of the exhibition Beruf: Künstlerin! Ten German female painters can be seen on Lake Constance in the Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie Konstanz.

reception

Although Elise Brunner was represented at several exhibitions during her lifetime and her oeuvre was received by contemporaries, she was forgotten after her death. Because of their fame, an obituary appeared in the Konstanzer Zeitung in 1932, which once again emphasized their relevance as cultural workers of their time.

In memory of the artist, the Konstanzer Zeitung wrote after her death: “Later, at Hildebrandt's school in Karlsruhe, she studied portrait painting and, under this capable teacher, gained a great deal of clarity of color and lively modeling, so that her later numerous portraits almost all of them show a masculine power of perception and presentation.
