activities

Patterson-Baysal is an active member of the Jewish community in Frankfurt and chairwoman of the Ostend Jewish Cultural Association . Since around 2009 she has been drawing attention to the growing anti-Semitism in Germany, Europe and the world with demonstrations , silent marches and flash mobs . In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris , she organized a vigil under the motto Je suis Charlie and a vigil under the motto Je suis juif at the main guard in Frankfurt . She is committed to interreligious dialogue with Muslims.

Patterson-Baysal protests against calls to boycott Israel and Israeli products. In June 2015 she therefore launched the “Stop the boycott” project. She registered the project “Stop the Boycott” on July 11, 2015 in the EU Transparency Register under the number 917038618141-71. The association collected food from Israel for the Frankfurter Tafel.

Together with other Jews, Christians, Muslims and atheists, she called on March 14, 2015 to read the Basic Law and, above all, to reflect on freedom of belief. Under the motto Together for the fundamental right to freedom of belief , the activists distributed 200 copies of the Basic Law and spoke out against anti-Semitism, racism, Islamophobia and exclusion.

In June 2014, a window in her apartment was smeared with a swastika and the slogan “Jews out”. This incident was also reported nationwide. In July 2014 she was the victim of an anti-Semitic attack. The window of her bathroom was thrown in and she was called "Jewish pig". The incident appears in the list of anti-Semitic attacks in Germany for 2014.

Patterson-Baysal repeatedly takes a stand on questions about the life of Jews in Germany and their fears and worries.

In April 2016, she was interviewed for a program on the Hessischer Rundfunk on the subject of “Unmoved and unrecognized - anti-Semitism in Germany”. Here she explains u. a .: "... the silent majority must stop thinking in terms of stereotypes and stop judging people according to their skin color or religion".

In May 2017 she described in the Frankfurter Rundschau in the article The violence and the silence anti-Semitism with which they are confronted in everyday life.

In April 2018 it was for the show culture time of the NDR on anti-Semitism: Why the hate? interviewed. Here she reported on incidents and hostility in school and in everyday life.

Since September 2017 Patterson-Baysal has been addressing the topic of “anti-Semitism in schools”, highlighting the legal aspects in particular and showing those affected how to act. On October 18, 2018, she took part as a speaker at the intercultural conference on anti-Semitism "You belong!" Of the Günter Feldmann Center in Frankfurt, which was opened by the Mayor of Frankfurt am Main Uwe Becker .

Patterson-Baysal has been active as a volunteer hospice attendant since 2018 and is also establishing this topic in the Jewish community.

Attitudes

Patterson-Baysal describes herself as a devout Jew and passionate Zionist . She rejects any demonization, marginalization and devaluation of people of different faiths. Above all, she warns against the general exclusion and imprisonment of Muslims. At the same time, she sees the terror on the part of misguided Muslims as the greatest threat to Jews around the world at the moment; she repeatedly advocates an open and constructive dialogue between Muslims and Jews.

In their opinion, however, respect for the attitude of those who think differently should in no way lead to fraternization or even trivialization. The difficult balancing act that this entails is repeatedly criticized by some members of the Jewish community - sometimes very severely.
