Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron (2007)

Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron (* 1941 in Jerusalem , League of Nations mandate for Palestine ; † April 12, 2020 in Jerusalem, Israel ) was Sephardic Chief Rabbi in Israel ( Rishon leZion ) from 1993 to 2003 .

Life

Bakshi-Doron succeeded Mordechai Elijahu as head of the Sephardim in Israel in 1993 . He was previously the community rabbi in Bat Yam and then chief rabbi in Haifa . In 2003, when he left office as Sephardic Chief Rabbi, he spoke out in favor of separating religion and politics. Only in this way could the rabbinate function independently as an independent institution without political dependencies. His successor in this office was Shlomo Amar .

In 2012, he was accused of being involved in a fraud case in which over 1,000 rabbi certificates were illegally issued to employees of the police and security forces during his tenure as Chief Sephardic Rabbi in Israel. This enabled the certificate holders concerned to receive monthly bonuses between 2000 and 4000 shekels and cost the Israeli state several hundred million shekels in total. This was the first indictment by a head of the Israeli Rabbinate in the history of the Israeli state. In 2017 he was sentenced to a suspended sentence and a fine of 250,000 shekels.

He died on the evening of April 12, 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Israel . Bakshi-Doron had been hospitalized in Jerusalem five days earlier after showing symptoms of the disease. He was buried in the Har ha-Menuchot cemetery in Jerusalem on the morning of April 13th.

Bakshi-Doron was married to Esther Lopes (1940-2005), the daughter of Shalom Lopes, the chief rabbi of Acre . The marriage had ten children.
