Eliyahu Berligne ( Russian Элияху Берлин Elijachu Berlin ; * 1866 in Mogiljow ; † February 25, 1959 in Tel Aviv-Jaffa ) was a Russian - Israeli lawyer , businessman and politician .

Life

Berligne received a Jewish upbringing and then attended the Russian high school. He then studied at the Law Faculty of Moscow University . He entered Chibbat Zion and became an active Zionist . He attended the first Zionist Congress as the fifth member of the Democratic Group and he was against the British Uganda program . In 1905 he visited the Ottoman Eretz Israel . In 1907 he emigrated to Palestine and settled in Jaffa . He founded a soap factory and olive oil production in Haifa and in Gush Dan . He was one of the founders of Tel-Aviv and was a member of the first administrative committee, of which he became chairman in 1909. In 1919 he was part of the Yishuv delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 .

1920–1948 Berligne was treasurer of the Jewish National Council . He worked in the bank Hapoalim , whose director he was 1921–1925. He was also a member of the Technion's board of trustees . In 1946 he became an honorary citizen of Tel-Aviv.

In 1948 Berligne was one of the founders of Miflaga Progresivit . He was a signatory to the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948 . However, he was unable to attend the ceremony because of his illness. Berligne later joined the General Zionists .

Berligne was married to Zita Lasarewna geb. Polyakova, daughter of the Russian banker Lasar Solomonowitsch Polyakow .
