Elizabeth Blackbourn
Elizabeth Betty Blackbourn (born around 1924 in New Zealand , † August 27, 1999 in Falmouth (Cornwall) ) was an English table tennis player . She won silver in the individual and gold in the team competition at the 1947 World Championships.
Career
Elizabeth Blackbourn grew up in Exeter . During the great world war she was part of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), a military alternative service for women in Great Britain.
In 1947 she was nominated for the World Championship . Here she was world champion with the English team before Hungary. In singles, she won against Angelica Adelstein (Romania) (without a fight), Audrey Bates (Wales), Věra Votrubcová (CSSR) and Helen Elliot (Scotland). The final against the Hungarian Gizella Farkas was lost. Before that she had defeated Farkas in a team fight. The doubles with Vera Dace only progressed one round and were eliminated in the round of the last 16. In mixed with her compatriot Eric Filby, she reached the quarter-finals, where it was Frank's last stop against Victor Barna / Margaret .
In 1947 Elizabeth Blackbourn ended her career as a competitive athlete. She studied medicine in America, won the American National Championship in mixed with Richard Miles and later went to South Africa for several years, where she specialized in chiropractic .
After their marriage, her name was Elizabeth Bennett.
