Elkford is a municipality in the southeast of the Canadian province of British Columbia , in the Regional District of East Kootenay . It is the end of Highway 43 .
The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on July 16, 1971 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ).
Demographics
The last official census , the 2016 Census , showed a population of 2,499 inhabitants for the settlement, after the 2011 census showed a population of 2,523 inhabitants for the municipality. The population decreased by 1.2% compared to the last census in 2011 and developed contrary to the provincial average, there with a population increase of 5.6%. In the census period from 2006 to 2011, the number of inhabitants in the municipality had developed significantly less than the provincial average, there with an increase of 7.0%, and only increased by 2.4%.
At the 2016 census, the average age of the residents was 37.4 years, well above the provincial average of 42.3 years. The median age of the residents was determined to be 38.0 years. The median age of all residents in the province in 2016 was 43.0 years. For the 2011 census, a median age of 38.3 years was determined for the residents of the municipality, and 41.9 years for the residents of the province.
education
The city has two schools of education, Rocky Mountain Elementary School and Elkford Secondary School. In January 2006 they had about 400 students.
economy
The vast majority of the working population work in the coal mine, which is operated by Teck Resources . It is located in the Rocky Mountains , more precisely in the Kootenay Rockies. This area is home to five of the company's six coal mines, which specialize in exports to East Asia.
tourism
Near the city is the 17,245 hectare Elk Lakes Provincial Park , a little further away the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and the Height of the Rockies Provincial Park and the Top of the World Provincial Park .
